The Governor’s Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding garden club in the state, as judged by the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania.  At the April 2019 Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania Annual Convention, the Shaler Garden Club was honored to be the recipient of this award for its 2018 activities. The Club distinguished itself by providing a year of well-balanced garden related programs, exceptional civic activity, club projects in all areas of conservation, and contributions to state supported projects.   The largest category of judging was based on the Club’s civic activity.   As part of our Civic and Conservation Program, the SGC members plant and maintain the Shaler North Hills Library gardens.  We were recognized for our Plant America Grant Project which established a certified pollinator-friendly garden outside of the library’s children’s department.  The Club also promoted an Earth Day project and hosted the Fairy Garden Workshop as part of its youth projects.  Our members were visible in the community as we hosted our annual plant sale, and co-sponsored the Shaler Great Gardens Tour and the Great Gardens Contest.  We hosted succulent garden workshops, wreath making and holiday workshops, celebrated National Garden Week, and teamed with the residents of Hampton Fields Retirement Village for a Horticultural Therapy Program.
